Tragedy in Yerushlayim

Baruch Ha'dayan Ha'emet.

By now the whole world has heard of the dreadful murderous attack in a synagogue of Yerushalayim. May Avinu Shebashamayim comfort all those who mourn. May He bring complete healing - body and soul - to those who suffered injury at the hands of the terrorists.

How is one to respond to this kind of evil? One positive step that all of us can take is to resolve to increase holiness in the world, to perform more mitzvot, to engage in acts of lovingkindness. By doing so we demonstrate the light of Hashem in a world darkened by senseless hatred.

Four men gave their lives on Tuesday morning while wearing tefillin and davening. I ask all my male Jewish readers to resolve to lay tefillin daily. In this way we continue the example our brothers in Yerushalayim set for us. If you have not put on tefillin before, consult a local rabbi to learn the proper manner to perform this mitzvah. To learn the basics, read "Tied Up: the Mitzvah of Tefillin" on this blog.

May we merit the coming of Mashiach, speedily and in our time. Until then may G-d shelter His people everywhere with the sukkah of His peace.
